Russia launched its first Cyrillic Web addresses on Tuesday as part of a global move by the Internet's administrators to boost access for users of non-Latin scripts.
The move has long been demanded by the Kremlin which hopes to boost the use of Russian, once the main language throughout the Soviet Union but now losing ground to local languages and to the creeping influence of English.
Azerbaijan has attached colossal importance to the Russian language since the first day of independence, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the opening ceremony of the Russian Informational and Cultural Center in Baku on March 12.
Lavrov stressed the importance of developing bilateral relations.

Edinburgh strengthens ties with Russia The University is holding a month of events to mark the opening of a centre to promote links between Russia and Scotland.

The International Parliamentary Conference “Russia-Africa: Horizons of Cooperation” took place in Moscow on June 15-16th, 2010. Deputies of the State Duma of Russia, members of the Federation Council of Russia, deputies of the African national parliaments, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, ambassadors of the African countries, representatives of other governmental institutions, business community and experts from Russia and 39 African states met for discussions in friendly atmosphere. During the Conference and the Business Forum two plenary sessions were held; as well as section discussions onthe role of Russian parliamentary diplomacy in resolving security and democratic development issues on the African continent; on the economic cooperation between Russia and Africa;on the humanitarian sphere as an object of the Russia-Africa interparliamentary cooperation. There were also several workshops, thematic round tables, seminars and bilateral talks.
U.S. Students Explore Russian Language and Culture Interest in Russian on the rise, educators say
Washington — In December 2009, students at Langley High School in McLean, Virginia, dressed in traditional Russian costumes and performed pieces by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov. They recited poems by Pushkin and Lermontov in Russian.
These students are enrolled in one of the largest Russian language programs in a U.S. secondary school. At Langley High School, the number of students in Russian language courses has increased nearly eightfold over the last 20 years.
In New York City, the prestigious Staten Island Technical High School requires four years of Russian from its more than 1,000 students. For the most proficient learners, college-level Russian studies courses are offered in collaboration with the State University of New York at Albany.
Founded in 1974, The American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) is a professional membership association for American teachers of Russian language and literature. With more than 1,650 members, ACTR is dedicated to advancing the teaching of Russian through publications, programs, and conferences.

The surveys were conducted in 2009 in different regions of the Russian Federation to find out what real changes had occurred following the enactment of the new immigration laws in Russia in 2007 and what are the main problems of migrants. Four questionnaires were drafted. The main target groups of the survey were as follows: officers of the Federal Migration Service – main governmental agency, responsible for migration issues in Russia; migrants coming to Russia for work purposes from CIS countries under the visa-free regime; migrants coming to Russia for work purposes from non-CIS countries (those requiring a visa for entry into the Russian Federation); former citizens of Russia returning to Russia from other countries - participants of the State Program on facilitating the voluntary resettlement to the Russian Federation of Compatriots living abroad.
